Wednesday night, a 2-year-old boy was struck by an oncoming train at the Fulton Street subway station.

ABC reports the incident occurred at around 5:30 p.m.

The NYPD told outlets  the little boy was walking ahead of his 20-year-old mother, who was holding bags. They entered the platform as the train entered the station.

It was reported that the 2-year-old’s foot slipped off the platform, which caused him to fall between the moving train and the platform.

NBC reported the child was sent to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Crew members were also taken to a hospital as a precaution.

CBS reports authorities had to use airbags to get the train off the child. However, they also reported that commuters and MTA officials tried to push the train off the child.

The MTA posted a tweet about the incident, which read, “All of us here at the Rail Control Center are heartbroken for the family involved in tonight’s incident. We cannot imagine their pain, and we cannot adequately convey our thoughts in 280 characters, so we’ll just remind everyone out there to be kind and take care of one another.”

Attached to the tweet, there was a statement about the incident, which read, “NYC Transit and NYPD are investigating a tragic incident at Fulton Street Station where a young boy apparently became separated from his mother and was struck by a northbound number 2 train at 5:36 p.m. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. The boy was removed to a local hospital by EMS and was later pronounced deceased. Our hearts break for the family and the MTA is praying for them. Our thoughts are with the crew of the train as well.”

The incident affected the 2/3/4/5 lines during commuting hours and later service was resumed.

Police were investigating the scene and have treated it as an accident.
