Coney Island sand sculpting competition draws both amateur and semi-professional sculptors

The Coney Island sand sculpting competition celebrated its 28th year on Saturday, drawing a crowd as both amateur and semi-professional sculptors took part in the event held near the boardwalk between W. 10th and W. 12th streets

Onlookers and spectators of all ages enjoyed the competition and the beach despite the overcast day. Organized and sponsored by the Alliance for Coney Island, the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, Brooklyn Community Services, and Astella Development Corporation, contestants were given four hours to create their work of art sculpted out of sand.

Spectators were seen using a handful of techniques and tools, from craft paints to shovels and trowels, in an attempt to create a winning masterpiece. Onlookers combed the beach, wandering from one creation to the next with curiosity as the clock ticked down to deadline.

Held from noon to 4 p.m., judges made their way around at the end of the four hour mark, awarding prizes of $250 given out in four categories: family, individual adult, group adult and people’s choice.

Hosted each summer, the Coney Island sand sculpting competition is open to the public and free for all.
