Meet Merlin, a job recruitment platform for blue-collar workers

Looking for new opportunities or employees on a job recruitment platform can be daunting for blue-collar workers — and employers. To stop the frustration on both sides of the hunt, Merlin is launching in New York City on Wednesday after more than a year of beta testing.

“Finding the right job and the right talent is still extremely hard today,” said Guimar Vaca Sittic, co-CEO and co-founder of the job recruitment platform. “We spent three months talking with hourly workers to understand what their problems were and how difficult the problems were. It doesn’t take long to see that the market is really broken.”

Blue-collar workers’ chief complaints about their experience on job recruitment sites were how long it took to find a job, fake jobs and location and commute times, Vaca Sittic said. Finding the right talent was the No 1. issue for employers.

On Merlin, “you’re not applying to jobs that might have been filled already or that you might not be qualified for,” he said. “It’s about building an experience tailor-made for you. We are very proud of the fact that today, it takes an average of 19 hours for a candidate to get connected to an employer — and know exactly what stage their application is.”

Making matches with Merlin

Ashley Johnson of the Bronx found two housekeeping jobs through Merlin and liked the transparency of its search process.

“You are matched to your specific interests, and you’re more at-ease knowing that you will have some type of communication and receive updates instead of nail-biting and hoping like I used to,” she said.

With Merlin, Victor Mouka, general manager, owner and chef of Amirs Food Services, stopped relying on agencies to fill vacancies, which “was terrible.”

“Before, I would waste so much time trying to get the right person, but now with Merlin, it’s all filtered, from experience to how far the employee lives,” Mouka explained. He added that Merlin is “life-changing because it is simple but effective. Within minutes, all the information is set up and is extremely user-friendly. They ask all the right questions so the right answers can lead you to the best employees looking for jobs like yours, and then they are motivated to contact you.”

While Merlin is launching only in New York City, “we’re going to launch a second city toward the end of this year, most likely Philly, and then next year rolling out to the rest of the country,” Vaca Sittic said.
