New Yorkers can celebrate the holidays a little early this year. The New York City school system has revised its calendar and officially canceled school on December 23.

The Movement of Rank & File Educators (MORE) and the social caucus of the teacher’s union, and the social caucus within the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) petitioned the department of education to reconsider making students and teachers attend classes on December 23.

In the petition, it was mentioned that for the last four December 23 that occurred on Mondays, there was no school. The most recent year this occurred was 2013-2014, ABC reports.

ABC spoke with Michael Mulgrew, the president of the union, who said it’d be “absurd to open school for one day and then close for break. It is not cost-effective. There are other alternatives.”

Additionally, the department of education shared a statement saying that “Every year, we work towards a calendar that meets the needs of students and families, and in response to feedback, we have adjusted the calendar and will close school on December 23. We are communicating with students, staff, and families in order to give them time to appropriately plan for this schedule change.”

Students and teachers will be on break from December 23 to January 2, 2020
