Snow is in the New York City weather forecast once again, and though it won’t be a foot of the white stuff, officials are warning New Yorkers to take precautions.
The New York City Department of Sanitation has issued a snow alert for Thursday night, beginning at 7 p.m., and the city’s Emergency Management Department has also issued a travel advisory for Thursday evening into Friday.
The flurries will start Thursday night and could drop 1 to 2 inches of snow on New York City, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters expect the wintry New York City weather to be a mix of snow and rain, changing over to just rain early Friday morning.
“A quick moving system will bring a light accumulating snowfall to much of the region Thursday night into Friday morning before changing to rain,” according to the National Weather Service New York office. “Travel will be hazardous due to poor visibility and snow covered roads, particularly across the interior for the Friday a.m. commute.”
The rainy weather will taper off around noon, though an afternoon shower is still possible. Friday should be a bit warmer too, with temperatures reaching up to 42 degrees, compared to the high of 33 on Thursday.
That’s not all, though, because some more snow is expected throughout the weekend. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon.
Saturday will get colder with a high around freezing, and forecasters say that “heavy mixed precipitation” is possible, with 3 to 6 inches possible of total snow and sleet accumulations. The cold weather could cause ice accumulations, also, of up to one tenth of an inch possible.
There’s a 100 percent chance of precipitation Saturday night forecasters say, and then Sunday could see a mix of “rain, snow and sleet” as well, with New York City weather wavering between rain, freezing rain and sleet, and then finally snow and sleet in the afternoon.
“Travel could be very difficult at any point during the storm,” forecasters warned. “Rapidly falling temperatures Sunday afternoon into the evening could cause any standing water to quickly freeze over. ” Expect strong wind gusts Sunday afternoon into the night, as well, that could bring down tree limbs and power lines.
New York City weather beyond the weekend: blistery temps
New York City weather is really starting to feel like winter now, and after the weekend’s mix of snow and sleet, things will dry up but remain bitterly cold.
On Sunday night, temperatures are expected to drop to a low of 11 degrees. They’ll “continue to plummet through the overnight hours, with lows Monday morning ranging from the single digits to near 10 degrees,” forecasters wrote. During the day it won’t get much warmer with an expected high of around 18 degrees.
Monday night will be cold again with a low around 12, but Tuesday will get up to 32, forecasters say, and by Wednesday temperatures could hit the low 40s again.
