This year will mark the 17th anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 when hijackers crashed two planes into NYC’s Twin Towers. In honor of the fallen, several Sept. 11 memorial services will be held in and around the city to remember the 2,996 people killed and more than 6,000 others injured in the attacks.

A commemoration ceremony will be held at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, Ground Zero of the attacks. A live broadcast of the memorial service will air at 8:40 a.m. Four moments of silence will take place in observance of the two planes and two towers that fell. Each year, families of the 9/11 victims, as well as survivors, politicians and local leaders gather to mark the day.

St. Paul’s Chapel will remember with prayers and reflections offered at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Rev. Dr. William Lupfer will ring the Bell of Hope at 8:46 a.m., marking the time when the first plane crashed into the North Tower. At 3 p.m. the chapel will host a service with the Choir of Trinity Wall Street to read the names of the first responders, rescue workers and the recovery workers who died. St. Paul’s Chapel is located at the churchyard at Broadway and Fulton Street.

The Judson Memorial Church has invited members from all faiths to take part in their “Down to the River,” a 9/11 interfaith ritual of release and remembrance. The remembrance will take place on Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. The event will take place at 55 Washington Square South before a walk down to the Hudson River at the Christopher Street pier for a sunset ceremony.

Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance, located in Coney Island at MCU Park, will hold a candlelight ceremony at 7 p.m. on Monday at the wall, officiated by an FDNY chaplain. Six firefighters from France and their wives will join in the ceremony to remember those who died at the World Trade Center.

While several Sept. 11 memorial services take place around the city, the Tribute in Light will light up the sky from dusk to dawn.The Memorial Plaza is open to the public after 3 p.m. for viewing the Tribute in Light.
