Local talent in the hunt to crack CFL rosters

With Canadian Football League training camps set to officially open on the weekend, Metro Halifax takes a look at the local talent vying for roster spots this summer.

EDMONTON: Former Saint Mary’s Huskies linebacker Tim St. Pierre is back with the Eskimos for a second season. Other: LB Andrea Bonaventura (Saint Mary’s); DB Elliott Richardson (Acadia); OL Adam Rogers (Acadia).

SASKATCHEWAN: Saint Mary’s has three former defensive backs vying for spots: Joel Lipinski, Jeff Zelinski and Sebastian Clovis. Lipinski and Zelinski are rookies. Clovis is in his third season. Other: LB Mike McCullough (St. F.X.).

WINNIPEG: Halifax native and former Huskies star Steve Morley is looking to get things back on track with the Blue Bombers. The former NFLer was signed from Toronto as a free agent. Other: WR Ivan Birungi (Acadia).

HAMILTON: Former Saint Mary’s receiver Darcy Brown, drafted sixth overall last month, begins his foray in the CFL as a fullback. Another Huskies grad, slotback Dave Stala, is looking to bounce back from two injury-plagued seasons with Montreal. Other: DB Sean Manning, Hamilton (St.F.X.).

TORONTO: Dartmouth offensive guard Gordon Sawler is hoping to crack the Argos as a rookie out of St. F.X.

MONTREAL: CB Kwasi Nkansah (St. F.X.).

BRITISH COLUMBIA: WR Matt Carter (Acadia).

CALGARY: OL Godfrey Ellis (Acadia), OL Steve Myddelton (St. F.X.), OL Derek Armstrong (St. F.X.).
