Locals shine at tournament

Last year, competitors at the annual Kits Classic Pro beach volleyball tournament had to play in raincoats.
This year, organizers said the hot, sunny weather made up for it in spades.

The sport’s first Vancouver tournament of the year, held Saturday and yesterday, attracted 32 professional men’s and 22 women’s teams from the Pacific Northwest.

Jamie Broder, 22, of Victoria, won the women’s pro finals with Kristen Knapp, 21, of Richmond.
Broder, a former member of the University of B.C. national championship-winning team and current national beach volleyball team member, is a 2012 Olympic hopeful.

Victoria brothers Sean and Dan Casey, usually on opposing teams, played together and were runners-up against Vancouver’s Ryan Cawsey and Alberta’s Steve Gotch.

“The (Casey brothers) usually end up playing against each other,” Riley said. “They split the prize money.”
