Looking at war at home and on the front lines

The Postmistress
Author:
Sarah Blake
Publisher: Amy Einhorn Books
Price: $32.50 (Hardcover)

The realities of war are interpreted both on the front line, and the protected home base in Sarah Blake’s The Postmistress. Set in the early 1940s, the novel takes the vantage points of three loosely related women, all affected by the Second World War. First, there’s Frankie, the London-based American radio correspondent and first woman in the field who urges to show Americans the truth of war. Listening to her dispatches is Iris, a Massachusetts mail carrier who assumes the role of secret-bearer for her town. And lastly Emma, whose husband goes to war after hearing Frankie’s enlistment pleas.
