Losing the extra weight is only half the battle

As Ashley Gibson knows, losing weight is only half the battle. The other half is keeping it off. Gibson, a 26-year-old actor in Toronto, successfully lost 30 lbs using Weight Watchers after a director asked her in August of 2006 to lose weight for a role.

It was February, 2007 when she reached her goal, and she felt great. She maintained her weight until 2010, when a job change resulted in an unpredictable schedule and helter-skelter eating habits. She started gaining weight again.

Gibson is now back on Weight Watchers and thrilled that the company has developed a new, scientific program called PointsPlus. The program is all about promoting exercise, providing a supportive environment, and telling people which foods are the best bet for reducing solid fat, added sugar and sodium. For instance, fresh fruits and most vegetables have a value of zero.

WeightWatchers is no fly-by-night weight loss program. It has been in Canada since 1968. An article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2003 found that people who attended weekly Weight Watchers meetings lost more weight and reduced their waist circumference more than those who tried to lose weight alone.

Gibson now eats at home more often and spends loads of time in the produce aisle when grocery shopping. She works out three times a week, mixing in dance classes, yoga and personal training sessions. She has lost five pounds on the new program. “It has helped me to reach my goals, become a healthier person and ultimately change my life. I want to shout it from the rooftops,” she said.

She likes it so much she’s become a Weight Watchers leader part-time. “I always tell my Weight Watchers members that there is no save button when you reach your goal weight and that all the habits you employ in order to lose weight, are all the things that you need to do in order to keep it off.”
