Mini Babybel Light

*** (out of 5)

Fromagerie Bel’s newly released Babybel cheese is just as light on taste as it is in fat.

The new Mini Babybel Light may have kept its predecessor’s chewy mozzarella texture, as well as its fun and eye-catching packaging but it’s far from making a lasting impression on the taste buds. Its flavour is limited to a strong salty after-taste.

It’s an unfortunate result for the French cheese-maker that has managed to put some tasty products on the market in the past. Take the delicious and perfect-for-sandwiches cheese spread The Laughing Cow for example.

You still have to hand it to Fromagerie Bel for making the Mini Babybel Light 50 per cent less fat than the original kind. And its new cheese product gets the OK from the dietitians at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

The low-fat Babybel also makes a convenient and healthy snack to pack up along with some celery and carrot sticks for a long day at the office or in your kids’ lunches.

But that doesn’t change the fact that Mini Babybel Light — like its high-in-fat clone — is still more fun to unwrap than to savour.

With recent talks of global warming, pollution and environmentally-friendly products, even the heavy but original packaging -- plastic net, plastic wrapper and wax shell -- doesn’t seem quite as interesting anymore.
