LRT reaches new heights

Construction of Calgary’s first elevated LRT station began yesterday, a landmark for city transit.

Mayor Dave Bronconnier kicked off the building of Sunalta Station, which will be 14 metres above ground.

“Progress on the West LRT continues at a fast pace,” said Bronconnier.

“The elevated guideway is just one of many components of the project, which is making substantial headway.”

The station is being built near the north end of Shaw Millennium Park at Bow Trail SW and is part of the city’s West LRT line.

This line will also include Calgary’s first underground station, bringing the total to six new LRT stations.

Completion of the West LRT line will mean Calgary’s LRT system will have doubled in size over the past 10 years.

“We appreciate the importance of our role and responsibility in helping the city of Calgary to continue its excellence in project execution,” said Pierre Duhaime, president and CEO of SNC Lavalin Inc.
