LRT services halted during morning commute because of fire

Some who use the LRT to get to work Tuesday morning could have been late as an industrial blaze halted service for about an hour near the Belvedere Station.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services says a fire in an industrial area on 134 Avenue — next to the LRT track — broke out inside a portable wood-framed shelter at around 6:15 a.m.

As a safety precaution, firefighters ordered Epcor to shut down the overhead lines of the LRT as the blaze came into contact with the track in the city’s north end, said fire rescue spokeswoman Melanie Mochoruk.

Damages caused by the blaze have been estimated at $260,000, said Mochoruk.

“Firefighters are still investigating what caused the fire,” she said.

Patricia Dixon, a spokeswoman with Edmonton Transit, says LRT services were halted for an hour, but shuttle services were provided for riders between Clairview and Belvedere Stations.
