Lucky day: Man wins $25M on Friday the 13th

TORONTO - Some may consider Friday the 13th unlucky, but not Gerry Clement — that's the day he won $25 million.

TORONTO - Some may consider Friday the 13th unlucky, but not Gerry Clement — that's the day he won $25 million.

The Ottawa man had picked out a set of numbers at random about a year ago, and had been playing them most weeks since.

Clement, 50, won a free ticket Aug. 6, as he had several times previously this year, but his numbers would lead to much more than another free ticket in the next week's draw.

His ticket was one of two to share the $50-million LOTTO MAX prize on Friday, Aug. 13.

"It's surreal, really," Clement said while collecting his winnings in Toronto. "You try to keep your feet on the ground ... It's going to change your life, but hopefully not too much."

The father of two currently rents his home in Ottawa and said he wants to buy his first house ever — and then maybe another.

"Family, travel, a house or two," he said when asked about his plans for the money. "After that it's hard to say."

His 12- and 13-year-old kids didn't know about their father's windfall as he cashed in his ticket, but that would soon change, he predicted. And it probably won't take long for them to make plans for the money, he said.

Clement worked in circulation at the Ottawa Citizen and the Kingston Whig-Standard and now he's in construction.

"Well, not anymore," he quickly clarified with a smirk. "Now I'm into finance."
