Mackie, Morel capture titles at Pontiac GMC Cup alpine ski event

BROMONT, Que. – Michael Mackie of Canmore, Alta., and Catherine Morel of Beauport, Que., won the men’s and women’s slalom titles Sunday in a Pontiac GMC Cup alpine ski event.

Morel won the women’s event with a two-run time of one minute 42.15 seconds. She stood sixth after the first run.

Montreal skiers Stephanie Marcil and Marilou Morin-Perrin were second and third with respective times of 1:42.27 and 1:42.32.

“I really didn’t think I had a chance to win after my first run,” Morel said of her first victory this season. “But I just decided to go for broke on the second.

“I wasn’t worried whether I finished or not. I just wanted to leave here knowing I gave it my all. I’ve been skiing well this year but this is the first race where the result reflects that.”

Mackie overcame a fifth-place effort following the first run to capture top spot with a combined time of 1:39.13. Benjamin Thomsen of Invermere, B.C., was second in 1:39.58 with Toronto’s Paul Atkinson third in 1:40.21.

“I feel pretty good about the win,” Mackie said of his first career circuit win. “In the second run I just gave it everything I had.

“A couple of guys in the lead messed up as well and that helped me get to first.”
