A man has been arrested after a 59-year-old Vancouver woman was sexually assaulted in Hastings Park on the PNE grounds.

The woman was collecting bottles in the wooded area at about 5:45 on Thursday evening when a man she didn’t know allegedly pulled a knife and then sexually assaulted her.

“After the assault, the man let her go,” said Vancouver police Const. Lindsey Houghton. “She then made her way to the PNE administration offices and they assisted her.”

Police responded after staff called 911.

“With the assistance of a Vancouver police dog, he searched the area of the park and a man was taken into custody,” said Houghton.

Gary Alexander Vogrig, a 47-year-old man of no fixed address, has been charged with two counts of sexual assault with a weapon.

Vogrig spent six years in jail for a similar assault in Vancouver in 1990, Houghton said. He’s being held until a court appearance May 21.
