Man assaulted and pepper sprayed during home invasion

A group of male suspects broke into a Timberlea home early Tuesday morning, taking someone who was asleep inside by surprise, police said.

Cpl. Joe Taplin of Halifax RCMP said officers responded to an emergency call from the Sprucebrook Lane address at about 3:45 a.m. He said three or four males dressed in black had “kicked the door in” and walked right into the house.

“The male occupant of the home came down the hallway, where he was punched and then pepper-sprayed,” Taplin said. “He actually made his way back to the bedroom (and) locked the door.”

He said police believe the suspects then ran away, without stealing anything from the home, toward the nearby Rails to Trails pathway.

Taplin said the resident, who was caught off guard during the home invasion, did the right thing.

“Of course you hear a noise in the house and you go out to see what’s happening and that’s when he got assaulted.

“He got away from them and called 9-1-1.”
