Man charged in 2005 murder

Suspect’s wife the victim in homicide

A 37-year-old Surrey man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the November 2005 death of his common-law wife.

Bradley John Benham was arrested on Saturday after a 21-month investigation into the death of Lisa Cubin, 35, with whom he had a three-year-old daughter.

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team media spokesman Cpl. Dale Carr said it’s not unusual for an arrest to be made after so much time.

“(Homicides) are not oftentimes solved overnight,” he said. “They’re very complex. Once we managed to gather what we felt was a pretty strong case we put it before Crown and Crown approved the charges.”

On Nov. 12, 2005, Surrey RCMP responded to a 9-1-1 call describing the sudden death of Cubin. An autopsy concluded her death was a homicide.

“Murders are something that never go away,” said Carr. “They stay on the books until they’re solved … Just because (people) don’t see anything happening, doesn’t mean nothing is happening.”

Benham will be appearing in Surrey Provincial Court today.
