Man dead, three hurt after car rollover in west end

A man is dead, three people are in hospital, and a teenage driver is in custody after a car jammed full of people rolled several times in the city’s west end early Thursday morning.

Witnesses said the driver of a white Pontiac Grand Am heading west on Stony Plain lost control as the car approached 231 Street. At least one passenger was ejected from the car after it rolled several times.

When police arrived around 6 a.m., three women and three men were found injured at the crash site. The teenage driver ran from the scene following the single-vehicle collision.

One man was treated on scene and the remaining five passengers were taken to hospital. One of the male passengers was pronounced dead on arrival.

An EPS canine unit scoured the nearby neighbourhood for the driver. As the team was searching, an officer spotted the suspect at a convenience store on 107 Avenue and 215 Street.

Police were on scene most of Thursday, investigating and interviewing witnesses.

Both alcohol and speed are considered factors in the crash, and charges against the 17-year-old driver are expected.
