A 41-year-old man was in Dartmouth provincial court yesterday facing several charges, including unlawful confinement.
On Monday night, RCMP responded to a residence on Old Sackville Road where it was reported a woman had been held against her will.
Police say the female was let go by the male resident around 9:20 p.m. and she went to a neighbour’s house to call the RCMP. Police say she told them the man was still in the residence and armed with a firearm. When police arrived to the scene, the resident called out to them and surrendered without incident.
Police say a search of the residence turned up a .32-calibre lever action rifle and a box of shells in the basement.
“There was a loaded firearm when the incident was taking place,” said RCMP spokesman Joe Taplin. “We (also) believe alcohol was also possibly involved.”
Gerald Johnson made a brief appearance in court, charged with assault, uttering threats, unsafe storage of a firearm, unlawful confinement and mischief. He was released on his own recognizance and is due back in Dartmouth court for election and plea Aug. 26.
