A man is presumed dead after being hit by an ice avalanche on Mt. Slesse, Chilliwack Search and Rescue said yesterday.
Recovery efforts were hampered by unstable conditions in the area and fears a helicopter may trigger another slide, said the Chilliwack RCMP. Now rescue teams are waiting for the ice to melt to recover the body, which could take anywhere from two to four weeks, said Greg Unruh, search manager with CSAR.
The Abbotsford man and his climbing partner were tied together in a climbing method called short roping on the northeast slope of the mountain Saturday morning when falling ice swept the man into a crevasse. It then took the partner, a Vancouver man, five hours to climb down to get help.
