Man hospitalized as bullets fly in daytime shooting

A man in his 20s was taken to hospital with a minor gunshot wound yesterday after a brazen daytime shooting only blocks from a busy SkyTrain station.

The shooting occurred after 3 p.m. on 10th Avenue, between Commercial and Woodland drives.

Fraser Mackenzie, a neighbour who lives three doors from the shooting, said he was studying for a forensic psychology exam when he heard five gunshots.

He came outside with his phone, but didn’t see anything “untoward.” There was broken glass on the street and a young woman was cycling toward him in distress. He believes she cycled through an irritant like bear or pepper spray.

Police arrived within three to four minutes and cordoned the area off, Mackenzie said.

Officers encountered two men in a shot up vehicle.

“One of the men was suffering from a minor gunshot wound and the vehicle had been hit by bullets,” Const. Lindsey Houghton said.

He added that there were no suspect descriptions and the motivation for the shooting is unknown.
