Man in hospital after shootout

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an early morning shootout with police sent one man to Sunnybrook hospital in serious condition.

The chaos erupted around 7:30 a.m. yesterday in the area of Hurontario Street and Bovaird Drive West. Peel Regional Police officers were in the vicinity working on a case involving a number of stolen vehicles and spotted a “vehicle of interest” in a motel parking lot.

According to SIU spokesperson John Yoannou, the officers noticed the stolen SUV outside the Flowertown Motel and approached to investigate.

“The officers began questioning the man in a room at the motel,” said Yoannou. But the suspect somehow managed to escape the room and sent the officers on a nearly half-kilometre foot chase through a field and industrial area adjacent to the motel. It was during the chase the shooting erupted.

“It is unclear who fired first,” Yoannou said, but the 23-year-old suspect was struck an unknown number of times in the volley of gunfire beside the Osso Bucco Restaurant.

The trailing officers were not injured in the exchange nor were any bystanders.
