A 29-year-old man is in stable condition after undergoing surgery yesterday following a shooting near Fraser Street and 12th Avenue.
Police were called to the area around 10:40 p.m. on Sunday after residents reported hearing around 10 gunshots, Const. Jana McGuinness said.
When police arrived, the victim was gone.
“A short time later a 29-year-old man turned up in a nearby hospital suffering from gunshot wounds,” McGuinness said.
“The man is known to police, however, investigators have not determined at this point why he was targeted.”
The shooting — the Lower Mainland’s 13th in a month — came hours after an anti-violence rally was held at Surrey’s Central City Plaza.
Roughly 600 people, including victims of crime and their families, attended the event to demand the community and government come together to fight the escalating gang violence.
Local NDP MPs Dawn Black and Don Davies told the House of Commons yesterday that British Columbians need immediate and effective action to combat crime.
“The government has presented no coherent strategy for crime prevention or diverting high-risk youth from gangs,” Davies said.
Black and Davies asked for funding for 2,500 more police officers, tougher bail conditions for gun crimes and more prosecutors.
