One man is dead after a crash early on New Year’s?Day on a stretch of Highway 63 known for a high number of collisions.

Police said yesterday the collision occurred 30 kilometres north of Wandering River around 2 a.m. between a Ford Ranger and a semi tractor truck that was hauling two empty chemical trailers.

Mounties believe weather may have played a “major role” in the collision, but their investigation still continues. The name of the deceased was being withheld until next of kin are notified.

Traffic investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call Boyle RCMP at 780-689-4081.

The province is working on twinning the single-lane highway that has seen more than 1,000 collisions between 2001 and 2005.

Wandering River is about 250 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
