A gunman who opened fire on board a TTC bus filled with passengers has pleaded guilty to attempted murder with a firearm and possessing an illegal firearm.

A gunman who opened fire on board a TTC bus filled with passengers has pleaded guilty to attempted murder with a firearm and possessing an illegal firearm.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Richard Haynes, 28, told Ontario Court Justice Carol Brewer yesterday after she asked him if he had arrived at his decision voluntarily.

A bullet struck his 17-year-old intended target in the hip and a ricochet of the shot tore through the outer layer of a female passenger’s coat, Crown Attorney Christina Pirraglia said reading from the agreed statement of facts.

Surveillance footage from cameras inside the bus captured the dramatic confrontation around 1:20 p.m. on Feb. 23, 2009, including frantic pass-engers stampeding for the exits.
