Police and fire rescue crews were called to Dow’s Lake Thursday morning to rescue a man who had left the care of Royal Ottawa Hospital attendees, jumped into the water, then clung to a buoy in the middle of the lake.

The man, who was voluntarily admitted to the hospital, was being transported to the Ottawa Civic Hospital at 8:30 a.m. when he ran away from the hospital staff escorting him.

Royal Ottawa Hospital spokeswoman Christina Selin said they have a policy of not physically restraining patients when they are not on hospital grounds.

“This is an isolated incident. It’s not something that happens on a regular basis,” she said.

Around 10 a.m. police crews and the fire services rescue boat brought the man back to shore.

He was returned to the hospital.
