Man seriously hurt in shooting by cops

A 19-year-old man is in serious condition in hospital after being shot by police during an altercation in the Westboro Area Tuesday night.

According to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, which is mandated to review all reports of injury, death and assault involving police, officers were called to investigate a suspicious person in the area of Lanark Avenue and Van Lang Private around 10:15 p.m.

The man fled from police on foot through a park and into an apartment building at 31 Van Lang Private. Officers pursued the man and called in the tactical and K9 units to help search the building.

After the suspect was located on the ninth floor of the building, there was an interaction between him and the officers, culminating in the male being shot by police, according to a statement from the SUI.

Five investigators and two forensic investigators were called in to examine the incident.

SUI has identified the man who was shot as Ryan Charles, 19, of Ottawa.
