A badly hurt 26-year-old man is very lucky he’s not dead after falling eight storeys from his Ramada Hotel room window Wednesday night.
Police were called to the man’s room at the hotel at 119 St. and Kingsway Ave. around 9:15 p.m. after 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call that was immediately hung up.
When help from the hotel’s security staff, police were only able to open the door by a few inches because of an engaged chain lock.
As officers were calling through the opening of the door, police say the door slammed shut from the inside and they heard sounds of things being broken and thrown about.
After forcing their way into the room police found it empty. The man was hanging from a ledge a floor below.
After several attempts by police to reach him, the man lost his grip and fell to the parking lot below.
Police say the 26-year-old was rushed to hospital where he is in stable condition.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the man’s fall, police said.
A woman who was staying in the hotel said she was shocked to hear about the fall the morning after the incident.
"I was scared about finding out about this, I have never been to a hotel where something like this has happened before," said Wanda who did not want her last name printed.
Wanda, a resident of St. Paul, Alberta, says she was staying at the hotel for a few days when she found out from hotel staff about the incident.
"When they first told me about it, I was absolutely shocked," she said.
