Police are warning parents to be vigilant after a man brandishing a knife approached a young girl on two separate occasions late last month.
Ottawa police are investigating the report of two suspicious incidents after a male approached a 10-year-old girl in the 2300 block of Russell Road in the city’s south end on April 23 and 24.
Both incidents, reported earlier this week, involved the same suspect and girl.
In the first incident, a man approached a girl at around 6 p.m. and offered her money.
In the second incident, which also happened at 6 p.m., the man grabbed the girl's shoulder, asked her name and age, and displayed a knife. The girl ran off and the man did not follow.
Police believe the man to be unknown to the girl, said Const. Jean Paul Vincelette.
“It’s very unnerving behaviour,” said Staff Sgt. John McGetrick.
“There’s definitely a reason to be concerned,” said Vincelette. “There’s a male subject out there that has approached a young lady. I think what’s important here is for parents to be vigilant. Don’t hesitate to call police.”
The incidents happened in the same area as several attempted abductions, all involving young girls, which happened earlier this year.
“There’s been some following and stuff that’s going on,” said McGetrick. “We encourage parents to be cautious.”
