Maritimes could see messy mix of rain, snow

HALIFAX – Several schools in parts of New Brunswick have closed for the day amid weather warnings forecasting a messy mix of snow, heavy rainfall and strong winds in the region.

Schools closed in districts in central and western New Brunswick, where up to 30 centimetres of snow is forecast.

An extended period of freezing rain is also expected over central New Brunswick due to a low pressure system tracking eastward over the eastern United States.

Environment Canada has issued several weather warnings for the province, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, which could also see a combination of snow and freezing rain.

Rainfall warnings have been issued for western Nova Scotia, where up to 30 millimetres of rain is expected by Saturday morning.

Wind and snowfall warnings have also been issued for western Cape Breton and southwestern Newfoundland, where wind could gust to 120 kilometres an hour.
