Market street changes set for trial run

Traffic will be flowing a little differently around the ByWard Market this summer.

As of this morning, William Street will become a dead end where it meets York Street. Next week the flow of traffic on the one-way street will be reversed, so vehicles leaving a city owned parking garage near that intersection will exit onto Clarence Street.

The changes will be in effect as a trial at least until September when the city council could vote to permanently change the street.

The intersection of William and York streets is expected to become a public gathering place that will encourage more pedestrians and bicycles in the ByWard Market.

Another goal of the proposed $275,000 project is to decrease the negative health impacts of air pollution from vehicles on market vendors, residents, and visitors.

The trial run is intended to determine the impact the street changes could have on other intersections, particularly at Clarence and Dalhousie streets. A right turning lane could be added to that intersection if it’s required.
