Less than an hour before the apartment building he lived in caught fire, Kendall Adams walked his boyfriend to the subway, kissed him goodnight and told him to call him when he got home.
Around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, the building, at 56 Maitland St., went up in flames, sending its 60 residents fleeing. The damage is so bad, they have been told it will be several weeks before they can move back home.
Fire crews found Adams, 61, unconscious in a third-floor hallway. He died in hospital.
While this is “very, very preliminary,” Toronto fire deputy chief Frank Lamie said, it looks like Adams “opened the door to his apartment, saw the smoke and or fire, tried to exit and couldn’t and was overcome in the corridor.”
The city of Toronto is providing temporary shelter at Metro Hall 55 John St. and so far 12 residents have indicated they will stay, city officials say.
