Maura Tierney holds court in The Whole Truth

Maura Tierney, beloved by TV audiences as Abby Lockhart in ER, didn’t particularly have her mind set on returning to the small screen.

But after successful treatment for breast cancer in early 2010 and learning her college friend, TV writer/producer Tom Donaghy, had written a role with her in mind for his new series The Whole Truth, she reconsidered.

“I probably have a new perspective on everything in general,” Tierney says of her attitude post-recovery. “Tom and I are friends — like, actual, real friends, not Hollywood friends. We’ve known each other for over 20 years, and it’s a priority for me now to be able to work with people who I really like and trust. It’s too much time involved to not enjoy it.”

In The Whole Truth, Tierney seems to love her new job. The actress plays Kathryn Peale, a deputy bureau chief in the Manhattan district attorney’s office who frequently argues against her pal, Jimmy Brogan (Rob Morrow), a criminal defense lawyer.

Each week, the two square off in the courtroom, with viewers discovering “the whole truth” about the crime — and whether or not the jury got the verdict right — in the episode’s final scene.

“I really responded to the character that Tom wrote,” says Tierney. “I thought it was a really, really appealing character because she has … such a great sense of humour, yet (is) so driven.”
