Mayor David Miller is jetting off to Los Angeles next week to attend a climate change conference being co-hosted by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It will mark the first time since becoming mayor in 2003 that Miller has missed a city council meeting. One is scheduled for Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

Miller says the opportunity to talk about Toronto’s initiatives to fight climate change and raise the city’s profile in the United States was too important an opportunity to turn down.

As for the council meeting, he said there are a couple of important issues, but most of the agenda is “fairly routine.”

“I’m choosing to miss the council meeting. I think this is far more important ... we’re talking the long (term) strategic interest of Toronto, and as it happens because I occupy this very respected position at the moment, it’s a real chance to get Toronto’s name out in the U.S. and around the world,” Miller said yesterday.

Schwarzenegger invited Miller a few weeks ago. He will stay two days and speak at the opening plenary session, titled Think Globally, Act Locally — Leadership at the Local Level.

Miller says cities are best equipped to fight climate change, citing some of his own initiatives such as the Tower Renewal plan.
