An interchange at the city’s most dangerous intersection needs an extra $130 million from the province to cover cost overruns, Mayor Stephen Mandel said yesterday.

The inflated price of an interchange at 23 Ave. and Gateway Blvd., now pegged at over $250 million, deserves funding from provincial coffers, especially when Alberta is recording large surpluses, he said.

“The province could, in my belief, pay for 23rd Avenue (increases), given that it’s a road used by everybody in the region,” he told reporters gathered at city hall.
