With only one week remaining in August, Mayor Peter Kelly has yet to take his promised “celebratory dip” in the harbour.

Kelly has repeatedly told Haligonians he would be swimming in the Halifax Harbour this summer, but so far has yet to follow through.

“We had a couple days chosen but it was either raining that day or events came up,” he said yesterday.

“It may be by the end of this week and by the end of the summer for sure.”

Kelly said his dip will help show the water quality is suitable for recreational swims.

But with the harbour water getting chillier by day and fall around the corner, has the yet-to-be symbolic swim lost its primary purpose?

“People do swim beyond summer too, into the fall a bit,” he replied.
