Mayoral rivals take gloves off

Now that someone has your attention — and the fingers of blame will start pointing momentarily — Whitby’s three candidates for mayor have something to say on the above.

Sex, lies and dirty politics.

Now that someone has your attention — and the fingers of blame will start pointing momentarily — Whitby’s three candidates for mayor have something to say on the above.

“This is the worst campaign I’ve ever been in. I’ve never had this kind of crap in my life,” fumes challenger and former mayor Marcel Brunelle.

“I never thought in a million years that’s what it would come down to in this town,” swears the incumbent, Pat Perkins.

“It’s a game that someone wants to play to throw me off my game,” complains newcomer and dinner theatre owner Rocky Varcoe.

Cue the sex, lies and dirty politics. And try to follow the bouncing ball:

Varcoe is rumoured to have starred in a low-budget erotic film featuring nudity and simulated sex acts. He blames the Brunelle and Perkins camps for spreading the smut. And “someone,” he adds, is stealing his election signs — 36 in one night alone.

Brunelle, who’s already steamed about Varcoe raking him over the coals for using Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s name in an interview on YouTube.

Perkins, who won’t name names, accuses a rival of making “wild, outlandish statements” that cast her in a bad light and show a total “lack of respect for the truth.” Varcoe says she misquoted him and he told no lies.

But Brunelle, with more than 30 years in municipal politics, is firing back as he tries to reclaim the top seat from Perkins.

“He’s trying to accuse me of being involved in this whole (rumour) thing and I’m not. It’s bulls---.” he says. “I don’t believe in dirty politics.”

Allegations arose that Varcoe appeared in a 1999 locally made adult film called Dead End last week.
