Available in 2006 and 2007, the Mazdaspeed6 amounted to a tweaked-up, winter-blasting version of the standard Mazda6 that packed turbocharged power, a six-speed manual transmission and all- wheel drive.

Look for premium features like keyless ignition, xenon lights, a sunroof, heated leather, Bose audio, automatic climate control and plenty more.

Engine

Standard on all Mazdaspeed6 models was a 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder direct-injected engine that cranked out 274 horsepower. All models got a six-speed manual and an Active Torque Split AWD system.

What owners like

Mazdaspeed6 owners say they enjoy plenty of power, good mileage, discreet and mature looks, and a plethora of upscale features.

All-weather traction, a luxurious cabin and plenty of driving thrills are also highly rated.

What owners dislike

Some wish for better performance from the Bose stereo system, and a more aggressive exhaust note. Other owners complain about the model’s requirement to be fed pricier premium gasoline.

Common issues

In the owner’s community, some issues have surfaced with rear differential and axle problems that could affect the differential bracket, drive axles or even the bolts that hold the whole system together. Test-drivers should note any unwelcomed noises from the rear of their potential Mazdaspeed6.

A full mechanical inspection of the vehicle’s rear end at a Mazda dealer should be considered mandatory ahead of purchase.

Verdict

Find a model that gets a thumbs-up from a mechanic and doesn’t exhibit any signs of abuse, and you’ll likely wind up with a very enjoyable and powerful sport sedan that’s ready for action, 365 days a year.
