McGuinty’s office admits it misled reporters about premier being in Mexico City

TORONTO – Reporters at the Ontario legislature were surprised to find out Premier Dalton McGuinty was in Mexico City last week lobbying for Ontario’s bid for the 2015 Pan Am Games.

McGuinty had been on two weeks’ holiday, but his office sent out a one-day itinerary late last week saying the Liberal premier had “private” business on Friday.

However, McGuinty’s office issued a news release today stating the premier had been in Mexico City Friday on public, not private, business.

If they had said nothing, the Liberals would have allowed reporters to wrongly assume McGuinty was still on holidays. But what they sent out was a deliberately misleading itinerary.

The premier’s staff say they didn’t want to tip off other countries competing for the Pan Am Games that McGuinty was in Mexico pushing Ontario’s bid.
