McIver still leads: Survey

With just under 40 days remaining, a recent online survey suggests Ric McIver still maintains a healthy lead in the mayoral race.

Zinc Research (zincresearch.com) conducted a random survey Sept. 3 to 7, asking, “If an election for mayor was held tomorrow, which candidate would you be most likely to vote for?”

Forty per cent responded Ric McIver. Former CTV anchor Barb Higgins trailed at 27 per cent, Naheed Nenshi was at 12 per cent, and Bob Hawkesworth and Kent Hehr were tied at seven per cent.

Civic activist and political blogger D.J. Kelly said it’s a big change from survey numbers six weeks ago — aside from McIver’s lead.

“There’s a lot more (that’s) going to change in the coming six weeks,” said Kelly. “I don’t think it’s a case of it being Ric McIver’s election to lose — it will come down to all the others and how they perform.”

The poll also examined momentum, with a question on change of opinion asked to respondents.

Of the responses, 48 per cent said their opinion of Nenshi had improved, with Kent Hehr also showing a 25 per cent improvement.

Kelly said he’s satisfied with the online poll design, only questioning how responses were acquired, and he reminded voters that polls are a snapshot set of numbers leading up to election day.

“Take them with a grain of salt,” he said.
