Mega-mall prepares for grand opening

With just two days left before the first shopping mall to be built in Western Canada in 20 years opens, progress is on track for CrossIron Mills to greet thousands of people on opening day.

James Moller, general manager for the mall, said that they expect 70,000 to 75,000 people to walk through the doors on Wednesday, based on the numbers Vaughan Mills in Ontario set on its first day.

“I think that would be fantastic if we hit that number, but again the Toronto market is a little different and bigger than Calgary,” said Moller.

Moller said the building can easily handle the amount of people expected, especially with the 6,300 parking spaces.

For people driving there, Moller expects heavy traffic and he urged people to use alternative routes west and east of the city to get to the mall.

Moller said that everything is on schedule to open Wednesday, expect for Indigo, which will open soon after.

“The stores look fantastic. They are all merchandised and you can see the stores training their staff.”
