It turns out Vancouver city Coun. Geoff Meggs won’t be needing spinal surgery after all, following a bike accident that knocked him unconscious and sent him to hospital with separated vertebrae in his neck.
Meggs was hit by a car while riding his bike near Granville Street and West 51st Avenue on Monday morning while training for a fundraising bike event.
He was wearing a helmet, but was knocked out and doctors at the time thought he’d need surgery to fix the vertebrae.
“Thanks to all for your best wishes,” Meggs tweeted on Thursday. “Good news: MRI showed surgery not needed, now focusing on long, careful recovery.”
Meggs was a major proponent of the campaign to create a bike lane on the Dunsmuir Viaduct, which officially opened on Tuesday.
