Men’s volleyball team falls short in bronze medal rematch against Cuba

CAGUAS, Puerto Rico – Canada fell to Cuba in a bronze medal match Friday, losing 3-1 at the North American Olympic men’s volleyball qualifying tournament

Set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23 in favour of Cuba, who Canada defeated in pool play.

Fred Winters led the charge for Canada with 22 points on 21 kills and one block, while Dallas Soonias added 17 points on 16 kills and one stuff block. Chris Wolfenden of Canada also had a strong match with 16 points all on kills.

With the event coming to an end many of the Canadian players will return to Europe to their respective professional teams while the remainder will regroup at the National Team Training Centre in Winnipeg.

Puerto Rico ended Canada’s Olympic ambitions on Thursday with a 3-0 semifinal win.
