Making it to the Top 3 on American Idol is a big accomplishment for many competitors, and for Syesha Mercado it’s only the beginning.
Mercado was eliminated during this week’s results show, leaving David Cook and David Archuleta moving on to the finals. Throughout the show viewers have watched her grow both as an artist and a young lady, thanks to the advice given to her by the judges and mentors who appeared on the show to coach the competitors.
Now, Mercado is ready to take on the world and make it her stage.
“Well, as I tell people, I want to do everything, and I’m really goal oriented, so I know that whatever goal I set, it can be accomplished whether its within a year’s span or 10 years,” she says.
“I want to make an album, I want to star in a film, I want to do Broadway, I want to open up an organic restaurant … it just depends on what comes first,” she continued.
The 21-year-old aspiring singer from Sarasota, FL also has marriage in her future, but wedding plans are on hold until she gets her career on track. Mercado says she’s the type of person who lives in the now, and at the moment there’s no big rush to say “I do.”
“(My fiancé) is so supportive and we both have a mutual understanding about everything, so when the time is right we’ll do it, but right now we’re focused on the careers,” says Mercado.
The former Top 3 finalist describes herself as a mix of many things. In terms of the album she plans on putting together, Mercado is interested in pop, R&B and even old school musicals. But that’s not all.
“I’m just like a black Christina Aguilera (and) Alicia Keys. I can definitely see myself putting together a Christina Aguilera album like the one she just recently did and an Alicia Keys album,” she says. “I’m growing as an artist, I’m evolving … you’ll know who I am once I put out that album.”
