Metro Canada announced today that it is expanding to two new cities, with the launch of Metro Winnipeg and Metro London on Monday, April 4, 2011.

Both new editions will target Metro’s core readership of youthful, active metropolitan residents, reaching a broad demographic of adults aged 18 to 49. The papers will be distributed by promoters, in street boxes and at strategic locations in both cities, rising to a total daily circulation of 40,000 copies in Winnipeg and 35,000 in London.

Winnipeg is the 8th largest census metropolitan area in Canada with a total population of 753,555. London is the 11th largest CMA, with a total population of 492,949, according to Statistics Canada.

With the addition of Winnipeg and London, Metro Canada’s nine markets will represent 53 per cent of the total Canadian population and 77 per cent of the country’s metropolitan areas.

Metro Winnipeg is a joint venture between Metro International S.A. and Torstar Corporation. Steve Shrout, Publisher of Metro Alberta, has been appointed as Publisher for Metro Winnipeg. “I am delighted to lead this remarkable opportunity as we partner with the community of Winnipeg. We look forward to offering a fresh urban news perspective in one of Canada's most vibrant Prairie communities," Shrout said.

Metro London is a joint venture between Metro International S.A. and Torstar Corporation. Irene Patterson, Associate Publisher of Metro Toronto, has been appointed as Publisher for Metro London.

London Mayor Joe Fontana said he is pleased that Metro is expanding into the London market. “I am very excited for London because this addition to our media will bring a refreshing new voice and energy to our community and will afford new opportunities for both readers and local businesses. Welcome Metro!”

“It is exciting to see the demand for Metro continue to grow with both readers and advertising partners,” said Bill McDonald, President and Publisher, Metro English Canada. “Our goal is to continuously improve and enhance our brand in an effort to reach the important target market of youthful, active metropolitans in every major market across Canada. Metro’s expansion into Winnipeg and London is the natural next step towards achieving this goal.”
