Metro Minute at Hog’s Back Falls

Get hypnotized by the rushing waterfall near Mooney’s Bay.

Officially called the Prince of Wales Falls, the site where the Rideau River splits from the Rideau Canal is probably better known to most Ottawa residents as the Hog’s Back Falls.

The falls are arguably the largest urban waterfall in Canada with water dropping 12.5 metres over a rocky 600 metres. They are also a man-made phenomenon, constructed in 1831 to handle the overflow water created by the slack water locks system on the Rideau Canal. The park nearby has several benches and lookout points for enjoying the water.
