Check out the surreal aerial photographs of the Alberta tar sands in local artist Louis Helbig’s exhibit, Beautiful Destruction, on display at the City Hall Art Gallery.

All of the photos were taken while flying an antique aircraft over the incredibly colourful and highly contrasting Alberta landscape that is being altered by the unstoppable advance of heavy machinery, smoke and effluent.

Helbig’s goal with the exhibit is to encourage Canadians to start asking questions and engaging on the issue of the tar sands, rather than frame the debate around us vs. them: East vs. West; Toronto vs. Calgary; and industry vs. environmentalists
