According to Michael Haynes, author of Trails Of Halifax Regional Municipality, you don’t have to leave the municipality to go for a good walk or bike ride. Here are some of his favourites:

• The Bluff Wilderness Trail, within 30 kilometres of downtown Halifax, is one of the “finest back-country hiking opportunities in Nova Scotia.”

• The Waverley-Salmon River Long Lake Wilderness Area is “a rugged pocket of pristine lakes, high granite ridges and diverse vegetation.”

• The 21/2-kilometre Gibraltar Rock loop trail is short but “a killer.” A map includes one section labelled “heart attack climb.”
