The University of Calgary will host a memorial ceremony today to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Twenty-one years ago to the day, 14 women at L'Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal were murdered in an act of gender-based violence. The tragic event has become the basis of recognizing and supporting action against violence committed against women.

Inside the Rozsa Centre today, candles will be lit in honour of the women and guest speakers will include university officials and members of local advocacy groups.

The event is scheduled to begin at noon and is free to attend.
